Why Prep Work Is 80% Of A Great Paint Job

Here is the thing most homeowners never hear. The paint itself is the easy part. By the time a brush touches your wall, the job is already either set up to last ten years or set up to peel by next spring. The difference is the prep, and it is where we spend most of our time.

When a paint job goes wrong, it is almost never the paint that failed. It is what happened (or did not happen) underneath it. So before we talk colours and finishes, let us walk through the unglamorous work that actually makes a fresh coat hold.

It starts with a clean, sound surface

Paint needs something solid to grip. On a kitchen wall that means cutting through grease and cooking film. On a bathroom or an exterior it means clearing off grime, mildew, and the chalky residue that old paint leaves behind. We clean and degrease first, every time, because fresh paint laid over a dirty surface is just waiting to let go.

Then comes sanding. Glossy or flaking spots get knocked down so the new coat has a slightly rough surface to bond to. Skip this step and you get that telltale peel where the new paint sheets off in strips a year later.

Fixing what is underneath

A wall is rarely a flat, perfect canvas, and that is fine. This is the part where we make it one. Before any colour goes up we work through:

• Filling nail holes, dents, and cracks, then sanding the patches smooth so they disappear under the finish.
• Caulking the gaps around trim, baseboards, and where walls meet, so the lines look crisp and moisture cannot sneak in behind.
• Priming bare drywall, patched areas, and any raw or stained spots, so the topcoat goes on even and true instead of blotchy.

None of this shows up in the "after" photo. That is exactly the point. Good prep is invisible, and it is what makes a wall look factory smooth from across the room.

Protecting your home like it is ours

Prep is not only about the walls. It is about everything around them. We mask off trim, windows, and fixtures, drop cloth the floors, and cover or move furniture before we open a single can. You should be able to live in your home the day after we leave and find nothing out of place except a better looking room. We treat your space the way we would want someone treating ours, which honestly should be the bar for anyone you let inside your house.

Why the cheap quote peels in a year

When one estimate comes in dramatically lower than the rest, the prep is usually where the corners got cut. No real cleaning, a quick coat straight over the old finish, holes left unfilled, no primer on the patches. It looks fine on day one. It looks rough by the next rainy season, and you end up paying twice. The price you save up front you spend again (plus the hassle) when it fails early.
