Siding material
Sound paint gets a wash and a scuff. Peeling paint means scraping back to sound edges, feathering the transitions, and spot priming, which is where hours multiply.

Two houses on the same street can come back with very different numbers for what looks like the same job. Exterior painting cost in Vancouver is driven by what the siding is made of, how far gone it is, how crews reach it, and what coating the wall actually needs.

Services We Offer
Cedar bevel drinks primer and bleeds tannin, so it needs a stain-blocking coat. Fibre cement usually arrives factory-primed and coats fast. Vinyl needs vinyl-safe colours to avoid warping.

Ground floor moves fast. Three storeys over a sloped yard or a tight side setback means scaffolding or ladder jacks, and setup time is paid time.

Soft fascia ends, split window sills and swollen trim bottoms have to be cut out or filled before coating. Repairs found mid-job change the scope after the quote.

One coat over a similar colour costs less than two over bare wood. Primer choice, sheen and whether the product is a full acrylic exterior line all move the total.

Bodies of siding roll out quickly. Cost lives in the cut-ins: window count, mullions, railings, soffit vents, gutter edges and doors that need masking and brushing.

Learn MoreWhy Homeowners Choose Primal
Primal Painting is family-run and has painted Metro Vancouver exteriors since 2018, from Coquitlam and Port Moody through Langley, Burnaby and North Vancouver. Estimates are free with no obligation and the scope is set out in a clear written quote, so you know what work the number covers.
We show up when we say we will, protect your space, clean up after ourselves, and don't leave until the finish meets a standard we're proud to put our name on.
How We Work
We walk the full perimeter, not just the street face. Siding type, coat condition, storey count, access and the state of fascia, sills and trim all get recorded before any number is written.
The estimate is free with no obligation and comes back as a clear written quote covering the surfaces, the prep and the coating we have specified, so nothing about the scope is left to assumption.
Walls are washed and given the time they need to dry through, then loose paint is scraped back to a sound edge, edges feathered, bare wood and knots spot primed, and gaps caulked.
Body, trim and doors are coated in sequence using Dulux, Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore exterior products, working inside the dry weather window rather than against it so each coat cures properly.

Good Questions
Most full exterior projects we quote land between $6,000 and $20,000. Siding material and its condition drive it more than anything else, because bare or failing wood needs scraping, priming and sometimes repair before any topcoat goes on. Height and access matter too, since a three-storey elevation or a steep lot slows every stage. Smaller scopes, trim and doors only, are quoted separately. An on-site look is what turns the range into a number.
Usually yes. Cedar is soft, moves with moisture and carries tannins that bleed through light colours unless a stain-blocking primer goes down first. Older cedar also holds paint unevenly, so scraping and sanding take longer. Fibre cement usually arrives factory-primed with a stable surface and coats quickly. Vinyl goes fast but limits you to vinyl-safe colours, because a dark shade absorbs heat and can warp the panel.
Yes if the body of the siding is genuinely still sound. Trim, fascia and doors fail first here because horizontal fascia tops and sill noses hold water. The catch is that fresh trim makes tired siding look worse, and if the body needs coating within a couple of years, you pay for the access setup twice.
Going from a dark body to a light one, or from bare cedar to a solid colour, usually means an extra coat and often a primer, so it is a real cost line rather than a preference. Staying inside the same family, one mid-grey to another, can often be covered in one coat if the existing film is sound, clean and not chalking.
The dry window runs roughly May to September, and that is when crews are busiest. Siding needs to be dry through, not just dry on the face, so a wash late in the season can need days before coating. Shoulder season work is possible when the forecast holds, but rain delays cost days. Booking the walkaround in late winter gets the scope sorted before the queue fills.
