Drywall Repair And Finishing

Drywall damage is easy to hide and hard to hide well. Nail pops, corner bead cracks, water stains and doorknob holes all need different repairs, and every one of them has to be flat and feathered before paint goes anywhere near it.

Services We Offer

Drywall Work We Take On

Small holes take mesh and compound. Anything past fist size gets a backed drywall plug or a new piece screwed to blocking, not tape over a void.

Interior painting, a light blue room with white doors

Patching holes

Paper tape bedded in compound is stronger than mesh on butt joints and inside corners. Mesh is fine for flat seams when it is set in setting compound.

Taping seams

Fasteners back out as framing dries. The old screw is reset or pulled, a new one set an inch and a half to two inches away, then both coated.

Deck staining in progress

Nail and screw pops

Dented or split metal bead has to come out rather than be filled. New bead is fastened, coated in three passes and blended back into the flat wall.

Corner bead repair

Knockdown, orange peel and stipple ceilings need the patch textured before paint. We match the existing pattern as closely as the surface allows, tested off the wall first.

Texture matching

Sanded compound is porous and drinks paint. Every repair is primed so the patch does not flash a duller sheen through the finish coats.

Why Homeowners Choose Primal

Why The Surface Decides The Finish

Primal Painting has been family run since 2018 and is available for drywall repair across Coquitlam, Port Moody, Burnaby, Vancouver and the rest of the Lower Mainland. Repairs are treated as part of the paint job, not a separate patch, so the finished wall reads as one surface under raking light.

We show up when we say we will, protect your space, clean up after ourselves, and don't leave until the finish meets a standard we're proud to put our name on.

How We Work

How A Drywall Repair Runs

1

Free Estimate

We look at the damage in raking light and find the cause first. A recurring crack over a doorway or a stained ceiling patch means something is moving or leaking, and filling it changes nothing.

2

Prep & Protect

Loose paper, crumbling edges and old failed filler are cut back to sound board. Holes are backed and plugged, cracks are opened slightly so compound has something to grip.

3

Paint To A High Standard

Tape is bedded, then two or three coats of compound go on, each wider than the last and each dried fully. Rushing a coat traps moisture and the joint shrinks back later.

4

Final Walkthrough

The patch is sanded flat, dusted off, textured to match if needed, then primed and painted. Where a repair sits mid wall, the coat is usually carried corner to corner.

Good Questions

Drywall Questions

Why does my drywall patch show through the paint when it looked flat before?

Two reasons. Bare compound is more absorbent than the surrounding paint, so it dries duller and the patch outline flashes through unless it is primed. The other is shape. A patch built slightly proud or feathered too narrowly is invisible under flat lighting but casts a shadow once light rakes across the wall. Sanding wide and priming solves both.

How many coats of compound does a drywall repair need?

Usually three on a taped joint or a patch: a bedding coat that sets the tape, a fill coat, and a thin finish coat. Each one goes on wider than the last so the build tapers out over a foot or more. A single thick coat shrinks, cracks and leaves a visible ridge.

Can you match my textured ceiling or wall?

Existing texture can often be matched closely, adjusting the mix and pattern until a test board reads like the surrounding surface. Some patterns match better than others, and popcorn ceilings are the hardest. In homes built before 1990, texture and joint compound may contain asbestos, so testing is required before anything is scraped or sanded.

What causes cracks that keep coming back in the same place?

Recurring cracks are movement, not filler failure. Common sources are seasonal truss uplift where ceilings meet walls, settling above door and window openings, and butt joints over a wall that flexes. Paper tape bedded across the crack handles most of it. Where the framing itself moves, the crack is a symptom of structure rather than finish, and compound alone will not hold it.

Do I need to repaint the whole wall after a repair?

Usually yes, corner to corner. Touching up a patch works only when the existing paint is recent, the same product and sheen, and the room gets soft light. Otherwise the touch up shows as a differently aged, differently textured spot. Ceilings and any sheen above flat are the least forgiving. Repainting to the nearest corner or break hides the transition.
